Staying safe

Stay safe from claim scams

People are targeted with fake claims and tracing offers. Whoever contacts you, these checks protect you.

Warning signs

• Anyone who asks you to pay or sign before you have read a written agreement

• Requests for your banking PIN, password or one-time PIN

• Pressure to decide today, or threats that you will lose the money

• A caller who will not tell you who they are, or which record they matched

• A request to send documents through a social media chat

Check any claim for free

• The FSCA runs a free search for unclaimed retirement benefits. You can phone the FSCA on 0800 203 722

• The Master of the High Court publishes a list of unclaimed Guardian's Fund beneficiaries at justice.gov.za/master. Claiming from the Fund is free

• You can always contact the institution directly and ask whether a claim exists in your name

How to check that it is us

• Do not call back the number that contacted you. Phone us on +27 62 820 4454 from this website and ask us to confirm your case reference

• Ask us who we are and which record you were matched to. We will tell you, and you can check it with the institution yourself

• Take your time. We never ask you to decide on the same day

If you think you have been targeted

Stop, do not pay anything, and phone us on +27 62 820 4454 if the contact claimed to be us. Report scams to the South African Police Service and to your bank.
